Seminar Notes- Job Search on Linkedin

Fun Facts:
1. 96% recruiters are active on linkedin, but only 36% of job seekers are active on linkedin, 
2. 89% of recruiters have hired candidates through social media. 
3. Social networks continue to grow the fastest as hiring tools.
4. Social edia has become a fast and cheap “background check” that is often done before inviting a job applicant in for an interview.
5.As a recruiter, if you don’t ask the question, the answer is always no.
6. Merger, re-orgnizating, layoff are the times to apply
7. Algorithm are ignoring words that are obsolete.
8. Recruiters don’t contact people who is not employed

Fun Tips:
1. when you are following a company, and when they are searching for candidate, you come up higher on their search. 
2. Photo Tips: men do not smile, women show your teeth
3. use photofeeler.com to see how people like your photo
4. Turn off notification when you update your profile!!

Profile page
  • add how people can contact you( only visible to your connections)
  • use "keywords"
    • find the key words from candidate qualification of the job you're applied for
  • Avoid these words: 
    • Motivated, Creative, Enthusiastic, Track Record, Passionate, Bottom Line focus, Self-Motived, Successful, Driven, Leadership, Strategic, Extensive Experience, Team PLayer, Problem Solver 
    • (Search Algorithm ignores them since you and 100 others all use them) 
Headline
  •   120 characters outling your greatest asset/brand
Linkedin summary
  •           use all 2000 characters with keywords
  •           define your audience
  •           write achievement and passions
  •           what makes you different
  •           get creative in the first sentence or two.
  •           Include a section entitled “specialties”- add the keywords that are important.
  •           Read the summary and check for:
  • o   How compelling?
    o   Does it express your uniqueness?
    o   Check on relevancy to your audience
    o   Does it say how you add value?
    o   Grammatically correct?

Linkedin experience summary

  •           use keywords
  •           achievements with metrics
  •          add link to former company if available
  •           add contact info. 

Getting found on linkedin
  •          profile is complete, including photo
    •          no photos profile will drop to lower 20% on search
    •          men do not smile, women show your teeth!  From shoulder up.
    •          photo need to be look like less 3 month.
  •          Copy and paste your linkedin url to your email and cover letter and resume
  •          Join relevant discussion group on linkedin
  •          Upload presentation, paper, to the profile

Connecting on linkedin
  •           who : current and past friends and colleagues, bosses
  •           sharing a group allow you to send direct message requesting to connect
  •           sharing a connection will allow you to request an introduction
  •           Group: if someone responds to your question, answer, discussion post, you can send them a response message. Start a discussion and then finishes it.
  •           paid accounts allow you to send direct mail messages
  •           import feature.
Job searching on linkedin

  •          linkedin’s job board- create your own job target profile
  •          basic searches- available for people, company, or jobs
  •          advance searches- available for people or jobs
  •          the update feed- articles, jobs, etc
  •          linkedin groups with jobs tab
  •          company linkedin pages ( who posted, your network? )

Boolean searches using LO
-quoted searches
     – for exact phrase, enclose the phrase in quotation marks, for ex: “product manager”
-OR searches
    – to see results include one of more terms in a list, separate the terms with an uppercase OR. For ex. “sales OR marketing”
- NOT searches
     –  to exclude a particular term, type that term with an uppercase NOT immediately before it. For ex, type “programmer NOT manager”

- AND searches
     – to get results that include two or more terms in a list, use uppercase word AND as a separator, for ex, type “manager AND director”
